Project Overview
This promotional video was created for a fictional Dream Pop music festival hosted in Brisbane, Australia, using original footage taken across Brisbane.
Motion and visual effects were applied to achieve a dreamy and ethereal feel, communicating the style of the music.
Software: Adobe Photoshop + Adobe After Effects
Final Motion Design Outcome

touchpoint 1: promotional video for dream pop music festival

touchpoint 2: stage backdrop visuals

Design Rationale
The design brief I have chosen for this project is to create motion design pieces for two touchpoints at a Dreampop music festival - the first touchpoint is a promotional video for the event, and the second is stage backdrop visuals to accompany the performance.
The music genre of dream pop places a huge emphasis on the atmosphere it creates and the unique sonic texture, which often results in a dreamy, hazy and ethereal experience for the listener. The approach I have taken for the promotional video is to focus on creating the mood and feelings of dream pop using stylisation, visual effects, and animated movements. The fictional music festival is set in Brisbane, so I decided to take video footage across the city and curate it together in the final video. With real location footage combined with visual effects, I intend to paint the picture of Brisbane city as a dreamy and other-worldly place, setting the scene for the music festival.
I have carefully selected the footage to include in the video to best communicate the dreamy state I intend to convey. I utilised ink splatter transitions between footage and timed them to the music to create an ethereal effect. Grainy, noise textures, colour corrections, and glow effects are applied to further enhance the dreamy quality. The design of typography has also been carefully crafted and iterated. The colour and texture (translucent) were designed so that they fit seamlessly with the background footage, together creating a “dream pop aesthetic”. I applied slow fade-on effects for text transitions so they are in sync with the rhythm of the music and the footage. A larger font size was chosen for the band names so that there was enough emphasis and contrast to draw the viewers’ attention. Subtle animations were also applied to the text so they were more visually interesting and engaging.
The approach I have taken for the stage backdrop visuals is to create an abstract music visualiser. This is fitting for the dream pop genre, as the music and associated aesthetics are often more abstract than realistic. I have created a 3D visualiser that responds to the music spectrum through abstract visual patterns. Subtle movements and orientation variations were also applied to make it more dynamic. The colour palette is kept to a minimum so that when it is projected onto the screen at the venue, the audience is not too distracted or overwhelmed. Rather, the subtle blue light and dark background should be able to blend seamlessly with the overall stage design, complementing the musical performance and enhancing the experience.
